They’ve had similar systems in Formula Palmer Audi for a while, and even Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered By Ford (nee CART) has had a “push to pass” button for a while also.
Even F1 uses something similar, if not so obviously contrived- maximum available revs will be dictated by the team at various times in the weekend/race- so maybe 19.5krpm will be available for qualifying/pushing to leapfrog opponents/pass on track, but may be turned down to maybe 17.5-18k max for the cruise to the line.
